Lionel Messi has made an emotional return to action on Wednesday following the de.ath of his father, Jorge, but his comeback could not prevent Inter Miami from being eliminated from the Leagues Cup after a 3-2 defeat to Mexican side León
The Inter Miami captain travelled back to Florida from Argentina on Tuesday night after attending his father’s funeral on Sunday. He was introduced at half-time and received a huge ovation from the crowd.
Jorge, who also served as Messi’s agent, d!ed last week at the age of 68.
Earlier on Wednesday, Messi paid an emotional tribute to his late father on social media and revealed that the loss had left him questioning whether he wanted to continue his football career.
“I don’t know what I’ll do without you, I don’t know how to go on.
“I just played football, and now I have serious doubts about continuing to do so for much longer,” Messi wrote.
Despite Messi’s return, Inter Miami could not hold on to their advantage. The MLS club took a 1-0 lead before Colombian forward Daniel Arcila scored twice to complete León’s comeback.
The victory made León the first team to secure a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals, which features clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX.
