NAFDAC warns against fake milk circulating Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning over the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets in Nigeria

According to an alert on the agency’s website on Friday, Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the manufacturer and marketing authorization holder of Cowbell “Our Milk,” reported the existence of fake products closely resembling the genuine 12g sachets.

“This includes unauthorised use of the brand name, packaging design, NAFDAC registration number, and trademark. These products are neither manufactured nor distributed by us, as the counterfeit packaging design was last used in September 2023,” NAFDAC noted.

The agency outlined how to distinguish the genuine product from the fake: the authentic Cowbell milk is creamy, features the updated PNG artwork “Our Creamy Goodness,” uses laser-printed batch details in the designated coding area, and has automated sealing and cutting on the vertical sides. In contrast, counterfeit sachets use the old PNG artwork “Our Milk,” have batch details printed with ink rather than laser, coding in the wrong area, and manually sealed and cut sides. The content of the fake product also does not resemble real milk.

NAFDAC warned that consuming counterfeit Cowbell milk poses serious health risks, including potential exposure to toxic chemicals, unapproved additives, or diluted ingredients that fail to meet food safety standards. Health consequences may include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and in severe cases, death, with infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly being particularly at risk.

The agency directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove counterfeit Cowbell 12g sachets from circulation.

Consumers, distributors, and retailers were urged to ensure that all food products are sourced from authorized manufacturers and to carefully check products for authenticity and quality.

Suspected cases of counterfeit or substandard products should be reported to the nearest NAFDAC office, via 0800-162-3322, email [email protected], or through the agency’s e-reporting platforms at www.nafdac.gov.ng. Adverse events or side effects related to counterfeit products should also be reported to NAFDAC via [email protected].
