A newly active armed group identified as Lakurawa have launched an attack on Mera town in Augie Local Government Area, Kebbi State, on Friday, leaving at least fifteen residents d3ad
According to Alhaji Bashir Mera, a local source, the group struck as residents prepared for Jumaat prayers, stealing over one hundred cattle.
“After hearing of the attack, the townspeople mobilized a large group to pursue the attackers into the bush, which led to a gunfight,” Mera reported. “The clash resulted in the deaths of fifteen residents and two members of Lakurawa.”
Another resident, Yarima, explained that the group operates from Sokoto, where it organizes its attacks. Initially, he noted, “They did not harm anyone, only seizing cattle and demanding Zakat, the obligatory Muslim charity for wealth meeting a certain threshold. This continued for nearly two months until this incident, which is the first involving fatalities in Mera.”
Upon learning of the attack, the governor responded swiftly, expressing deep concern. He contacted local authorities and deployed armed soldiers with gun trucks and armored vehicles to secure the area.
Yarima also mentioned that security forces, including the commanding officer from Dukku barracks, the DSS director, the Commissioner of Police, and combined military units, have since been deployed, restoring calm to the town.
Additionally, Kebbi State’s Deputy Governor and the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mera, visited Mera to offer condolences and reassure residents of their safety. The deputy governor emphasized the governor’s commitment to protecting residents from future threats.
