States in the Niger Delta region, especially Rivers and Bayelsa, are likely to experience months of electricity blackouts after vandals destroyed 13 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuit transmission line.
This information was disclosed by Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in a statement on Wednesday. Mbah explained that the incident, which was first reported by the Youth President of the Ukpeli Community in Rivers State on August 12, 2024, has significantly impacted the power supply in the region.
According to Mbah, the damage includes 13 transmission towers, with nine completely collapsed and four others dangerously close to falling. Given the scale of the damage and the ongoing repairs on previously vandalized towers, it could take several months for TCN to rebuild and re-string the towers, delaying the restoration of power supply to the affected areas.
“The Port Harcourt region of TCN, led by General Manager of Transmission, Engr. Emmanuel Akpa, quickly visited the site near TCN’s Ahoada Transmission Substation to assess the situation. The team confirmed that thirteen towers, from T52 to T64, were affected by vandalism. Of these, nine towers have collapsed completely, while four are hanging precariously and could collapse at any moment,” TCN stated.
