Protests have broken out in Rivers State as women took to the streets demanding the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, four days after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state
A viral post on X, formerly Twitter, shows a large crowd of women marching with placards in support of Fubara, calling for his return as governor.
The demonstration follows Tinubu’s suspension of Fubara and his deputy, replacing them with a sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.
Fubara was suspended on March 18, 2025, amid escalating political turmoil that allegedly crippled governance and threatened national stability.
President Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, granting him emergency powers to dissolve the state government. As a result, Fubara, his deputy, and all state legislators were removed, with Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas appointed as the state’s sole administrator.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with critics calling it an attack on democracy, while supporters argue it was necessary to restore order.
