House of Representatives member Philip Agbese has filed a lawsuit against Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan over allegations that he and two other lawmakers demanded a $150 million bribe in cryptocurrency
Gambaryan had accused Agbese, Peter Akpanke, and another legislator of requesting the payment into their personal wallets. In response, Agbese denied the claims, stating he has never engaged in cryptocurrency trading and does not own a crypto wallet.
In a statement on Monday, Agbese revealed that he had given Gambaryan a seven-day ultimatum to either provide evidence or issue a public apology. However, after Gambaryan failed to retract his claims, Agbese proceeded with legal action.
“I was compelled to approach the court because my reputation as a citizen, a distinguished congressman, and that of my country is at stake,” he said.
The lawsuit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, seeks N1.5 billion in damages. Agbese is also requesting a court order restraining Gambaryan and his associates from making further defamatory statements and demanding a public retraction of the allegations.
