Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end on Monday as Portugal suffered a dramatic 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, with Mikel Merino scoring a stoppage-time winner to send the Spaniards into the quarter-finals
The Portuguese captain pushed tirelessly to inspire his side, creating several dangerous moments and testing Spain’s defence, but he was unable to find the breakthrough.

Portugal also threatened through João Félix, Bruno Fernandes and Nuno Mendes, only to be frustrated by an outstanding performance from Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón, who produced a series of crucial saves to keep the match scoreless.
Spain created chances of their own through Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pedro Porro, Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal, while Diogo Costa made important stops to keep Portugal in the contest.
Portugal’s hopes suffered another setback in the second half when Nuno Mendes was forced off injured and replaced by Nelson Semedo.
With the game seemingly heading for extra time, Spain made a decisive tactical change by introducing Mikel Merino in the 85th minute. The substitute repaid his manager’s faith six minutes later, collecting a pass from Ferran Torres before firing a low shot past Diogo Costa in the 91st minute.
The late goal ended Ronaldo’s hopes of leading Portugal into the quarter-finals, while Spain advanced to the last eight after a dramatic victory.
