Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has unveiled a statue in honour of Nigeria’s celebrated literary icon, Chinua Achebe, 13 years after his passing
The monument, located at Ugwunwasike Roundabout in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, was unveiled on Saturday as part of efforts to preserve the legacy of the renowned author.

Speaking during the ceremony, Soludo described Achebe as a global symbol of excellence whose works continue to inspire generations around the world.
He said his administration remains committed to protecting the literary giant’s legacy while creating an environment that nurtures future generations of writers.
“Achebe represents excellence and remains one of the world’s greatest literary figures. We will continue to support initiatives that inspire the emergence of more Achebes in Idemili North and Anambra State,” the governor said.
The event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and literary enthusiasts. The Mayor of Idemili North Local Government Area, Stanley Nkwoka, also praised Achebe’s enduring influence and commended Soludo for honouring the late novelist.
Achebe, widely regarded as the father of modern African literature, rose to international prominence with his 1958 novel, Things Fall Apart, which has been translated into several languages and remains one of the most widely studied African literary works.
The newly unveiled statue is expected to preserve Achebe’s legacy while boosting cultural heritage and literary tourism in Ogidi, his hometown.
Chinua Achebe d!ed on March 21, 2013, at the age of 82 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, following a brief illness. He was laid to rest on May 23, 2013, in Ogidi, Anambra State.
