Marcus Monzo, a 37-year-old Spanish-Brazilian man, is facing life in prison after being convicted of m8rdering 14-year-old British-Nigerian schoolboy Daniel Anjorin during a violent rampage in Hainault, northeast London

A jury at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) found Monzo guilty on Wednesday of murder, three counts of attempted murder, aggravated burglary, possession of a bladed article, and causing grievous bodily harm. He was cleared of one attempted murder charge but convicted of the lesser offence of wounding with intent.
The attack, which lasted around 20 minutes on April 30 last year, saw Monzo randomly target multiple victims. He began by ramming his van into pedestrian Donato Iwule before slashing him in the neck with a sword. Minutes later, Monzo crept up on Daniel, who was walking to school with headphones on, and struck him with a “devastating and unsurvivable” blow to the face and neck. Witnesses said Monzo screamed in delight after the k!lling.
He then went on to stab police officer PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield and attack a couple inside their home as their child slept nearby. Before fleeing the scene, he asked them if they “believed in God.” Monzo also injured Inspector Molloy Campbell before climbing onto a garage roof, where he was eventually arrested.
During the trial, Daniel’s grieving parents described him as “a beloved son” and “loving brother,” expressing heartbreak that he left home for school and never returned. “We have lost the most loved and amazing son,” they said in a statement.
Monzo, who holds a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, claimed he had no memory of the attack and blamed his actions on diminished responsibility due to mental illness. He admitted to drinking ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic brew, but tests showed no trace of DMT—the active substance—was found in his system. Prosecutors argued his psychosis was self-induced and not a defense for murder.
At one point during his detention in Broadmoor secure hospital, Monzo reportedly reenacted stabbing motions while discussing violent films with staff. He also likened the attacks to a real-life version of The Hunger Games and claimed his personality had “switched.”
He previously admitted to possessing a samurai sword used in the attack and a katana found in his van. Monzo will be sentenced Friday at the Old Bailey.
