The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, made the disclosure on Wednesday in a statement issued through the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo. According to the statement, the disbursement is part of the administration’s efforts to revamp the education sector.

“This move stands as yet another testament to Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector,” Boriowo said.

“It reflects the administration’s bold resolve to transition Nigeria from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy through strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.”

Dr. Alausa described the release of the funds as more than a financial transaction, calling it a reaffirmation of the President’s belief in the potential of Nigerian youth and the vital role of university staff.

“By prioritising their welfare, we are laying the foundation for a future where every Nigerian child receives highly qualitative and globally competitive education,” the Minister added.

He also conveyed President Tinubu’s appreciation to academic and non-academic unions for their cooperation and for maintaining stability in the university system.

“Notably, the country is currently experiencing one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history—a feat attributed to the mutual understanding between the government and the university community,” the statement noted.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education, stating, “The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me and my administration. Keeping our children in school is not negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”

However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refuted claims that the N50 billion has been received. Speaking to SaharaReporters, ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, challenged the government’s announcement.

“You said that the government released the N50 billion to ASUU, but why are you bringing other staff? Every union negotiates for its members. It is not a collective,” Osodeke stated.

He further accused government officials of pushing a misleading narrative, saying ASUU had only received verbal assurances and had seen no official documentation or confirmation of the funds.
