Two people were k!lled early Thursday after a diesel tanker exploded along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed

Confirming the incident in a statement shared on its X page, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary investigations pointed to speeding as the cause.

“Preliminary findings from security investigations indicate that the unfortunate incident was precipitated by excessive speed, as the tanker driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake another road user,” the statement said.

“The vehicle subsequently crashed and erupted into a raging inferno, tragically trapping and claiming the lives of the driver and an adult female occupant.”

Taofiq noted that LASTMA officers on duty swiftly moved in to manage the situation. “LASTMA personnel who were actively monitoring and managing vehicular movement within the corridor responded with remarkable alacrity and professionalism,” he added.

The affected section of the road was immediately secured to prevent further accidents, while the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (Ojo Unit), the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Ijanikin Police Division were alerted for emergency response and security support.

LASTMA officials also stopped bystanders from attempting to scoop diesel from the scene, a move described as extremely dangerous and capable of causing further explosions.

After the fire was brought under control, the burnt tanker was removed to ease traffic, and the remains of the victims were evacuated by the FRSC.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as “deeply painful and entirely avoidable,” while commiserating with the families of those who lost their lives.

He urged tanker and articulated vehicle drivers to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic rules, and warned the public against the risky habit of collecting spilt petroleum products from accident scenes.

“The Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to public safety and the sanctity of human life,” Bakare-Oki said.
