The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has criticised the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for declaring an industrial action without complying with established procedures
ASUU members at UNILAG had, during a congress on Tuesday, directed lecturers to stop work from Wednesday, accusing the authorities of failing to complete payment of their January and February salaries.

The union also maintained that its members were yet to receive their full Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance.
Chairman of the UNILAG chapter of ASUU, Prof. Idou Keinde, made it clear that lecturers would remain off duty until all outstanding entitlements are paid.
Reacting to the development, the university’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the institution was disappointed that the union announced the action without observing the proper process.
She explained that the management is still committed to the welfare of its staff and has continued discussions with the union to address concerns, especially the unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances.
“Management observes that due process was not followed in making this declaration. Nevertheless, discussions with the ASUU Executive are ongoing to address all issues,” the statement read.
The university also reassured students that examinations already in progress would go on as planned on Wednesday in order to avoid disruption.
According to the institution, maintaining academic activities is crucial at this stage of the semester, particularly as students prepare for internships, the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), and admission processes for the Law School.
For courses where examinations were earlier postponed, the school said fresh arrangements have been made, adding that all outstanding exams will continue from Thursday, March 12, 2026.
The management further appealed to staff and students to remain calm while talks with ASUU continue in a bid to resolve the dispute.
