The United States Supreme Court has ruled against President Donald Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship, rejecting one of the key immigration measures introduced at the start of his second term

In a 6-3 decision delivered on Tuesday, the court struck down Trump’s executive order that sought to deny automatic U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil under certain circumstances.

Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which grants citizenship to all persons born or naturalised in the United States. Trump had signed the executive order on his first day back in office in a bid to restrict that right.

Explaining the court’s decision, Chief Justice John Roberts said:

“Citizenship, then and now, was the right to have rights — to freely participate in our political community. The Framers of the Fourteenth Amendment extended that promise to ‘every free-born person in this land’. We keep that promise today.”

The ruling comes after lower courts had earlier blocked the executive order while legal challenges were being considered.

Trump’s relationship with the Supreme Court has become increasingly strained in recent months despite having appointed three of its nine justices. The president had repeatedly criticised the court and publicly predicted that it would rule against him on the birthright citizenship case.
