The United States has been ranked among the least peaceful nations in the world in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), a revelation that has triggered widespread online debate
The latest GPI report, which evaluates levels of crime, internal conflict, militarization, and political stability across 163 countries, placed the US near the bottom of the list. The nation now sits at 128th, a significant drop from its 88th position out of 153 countries in 2012.

Analysts link the decline to increasing political unrest, violent demonstrations, high weapons imports, and heavy military expenditure.
Compounding concerns about the country’s global image, the Congressional Research Service revealed that international arrivals at US borders dropped by 2.4 percent in 2024. Experts partly attribute the decline to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which sparked a Canadian travel boycott that hurt tourism in several states.
The Trump administration’s economic and immigration policies have also been in the spotlight. Tariffs have been imposed on countries such as Canada, China, South Africa, Mexico, Colombia, and members of the European Union. In addition, new visa measures now require nonimmigrant applicants to attend in-person interviews and disclose their social media handles from the past five years.
These changes, officials argue, are aimed at bolstering national security, but critics say they have contributed to a perception of the US as less welcoming and, increasingly, less peaceful on the global stage.
