The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday visited the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, at his private residence, amid growing political tension in Rivers State over the alleged disqualification of lawmakers loyal to Governor Sim Fubara from the state assembly primaries
Party sources said the meeting was initiated by the APC national chairman as part of efforts to reconcile Wike and Governor Fubara, whose political relationship has remained strained.
The visit also comes ahead of the APC governorship primary scheduled for May 21, with allegations linking Wike to moves aimed at preventing Fubara from participating in the contest.
Special Adviser to the APC National Chairman on Media, Abimbola Toki, confirmed the meeting during a telephone interview with the Nigerian Tribune.
However, Toki said he could not confirm whether Professor Yilwatda was trying to mediate in the Rivers political crisis or calm tensions involving the FCT minister.
Wike has repeatedly maintained that Governor Fubara would not be allowed to secure another term in office in Rivers State.
Despite the speculation surrounding the meeting, Toki insisted it was a private visit unrelated to the leadership dispute in the South-South state.
