The University of Lagos has formally sworn in a new Students’ Union Executive Council, signaling the return of student union activities ten years after the body was dissolved

The union had been suspended on April 24, 2016, following widespread protests by students over welfare issues such as water scarcity and unstable power supply—developments the institution said disrupted academic activities and posed security concerns.

Its revival was confirmed in March after elections were successfully conducted to fill key leadership roles within the union.

At the inauguration ceremony held at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall in Akoka, Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola administered the oath of office to the newly elected executives. Hall representatives and leaders from the Institute of Continuing Education were also sworn in.

Addressing the new officials, Ogunsola urged them to see their roles as an opportunity to serve both the student body and the university community at large.

She recalled that the union’s earlier suspension followed violent demonstrations that led to destruction of property and interruptions to academic work, stressing that such actions made the decision unavoidable at the time.

Expressing optimism about the future, the Vice-Chancellor said she expects the new leadership to embrace discipline, constructive dialogue, and responsible engagement while representing students’ interests.

She described the development as a major step forward in strengthening governance and fostering better interaction between students and the university administration.
