The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima on Tuesday revealed how some persons allegedly attempted to sow discord between him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shortly after they assumed office in 2023
Shettima made the revelation in Abuja during the public presentation of the autobiography of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the event, Shettima recounted that some individuals from his home state of Borno approached the President, alleging that he intended to k!ll him and take over power.
According to the Vice President, the individuals specifically warned Tinubu against wearing traditional clothes Shettima had earlier gifted to him during the APC presidential campaign period.
“Barely three months after we assumed office, some people from Borno came to the President and told him to stop wearing the clothes I gave him because I had charmed them and was planning to k!ll him and take over power,” Shettima said.
He, however, praised Tinubu for dismissing the allegation, noting that the President considered the claim illogical.
“Shettima said Tinubu told him: ‘Their story did not add up because when you gave me those clothes, I was only an aspirant. I was not yet the presidential candidate and neither were you the vice-presidential candidate.’”
The Vice President added that Tinubu deliberately continued wearing the clothes for about a week to demonstrate that he was not influenced by superstition or ethnic suspicion.
“For one week, the President kept wearing the clothes to prove he was not fetish or superstitious,” he said.
Shettima used the occasion to call for national unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians, warning against divisive politics and mutual suspicion.
