Osimhen reflects on Nigeria missing World Cup qualification

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have ended in disappointment after the Super Eagles failed to secure qualification, marking a second consecutive absence from football’s biggest stage.

The final blow reportedly came in a tense playoff encounter against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where Nigeria were eliminated 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw in regulation time. The result brought an abrupt end to a campaign that had carried high expectations given the quality within the squad.

Speaking months after the setback, striker Victor Osimhen admitted the mood within the team was difficult to accept.

“I feel bad not playing the World Cup. This is the second time in a row. I was talking with the other guys and they feel the same way, but we move,” Osimhen said.

The Napoli forward, who currently plays his club football for Galatasaray, has been one of Nigeria’s most important attacking figures in recent years and has consistently spoken about his desire to represent his country at the World Cup.

Several of his teammates, including Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi, are also understood to be disappointed by the outcome, having been part of a squad that showed flashes of quality but struggled for consistency during the qualification campaign.

Despite the disappointment, Osimhen’s closing words reflected a forward looking mindset as attention gradually turns to upcoming competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria will look to regroup and rebuild confidence on the international stage.
