There was heavy traffic disruption on Monday at the popular Iwo Road area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, as protesters blocked major routes in the area.

The demonstration, which began around 10am, was led by members of the Take It Back Movement, a human rights group calling for urgent action over rising insecurity and the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

The protesters demanded the immediate release of 39 a.bducted pupils and teachers from communities in Oriire Local Government Area, while also calling for broader action to address insecurity across the country.

Speaking during the protest, the National Coordinator of the movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the action was part of ongoing efforts since the k!dnapping incident in May.

He added that the protest was not limited to the South-West, stressing that it was a nationwide call for the release of all k!dnapped victims.

“We will continue to protest for the release of all a.bducted victims until they are free. We believe that government officials are in the comfort of their rooms and offices while innocent 46 students and their teachers are languishing in the k!dnappers’ den,” he said.

“We are demanding freedom for all captives in the North, South, West and East of Nigeria,” he added..

Sanyaolu also criticised political leaders, accusing them of focusing on preparations for the 2027 elections while insecurity persists across the country.

“We will not be sitting until 2027. By that time, we won’t even know how many will be alive. So that is why we are at the heart of Ibadan in Oyo State, where the abduction took place. The state and federal governments must act or they will continue to witness mass action,” he warned.
