For some couples, money can become a sensitive subject, especially when the woman starts earning much more than the man.
Mary Remmy Njoku believes this is where some men struggle. She says a woman can be happy to see her husband succeed because she sees his success as something that benefits the entire family. But when the situation is reversed, some men find it difficult to handle.
In a post she shared, she wrote:
“Most women are genuinely happy when their man becomes very successful. In fact, many women pray for it. They want their husbands to win because they see his success as a win for the family.But a lot of men struggle when the tables are turned.When the woman starts earning significantly more, some men begin to feel emasculated, inadequate, or disrespected. Even when she has done absolutely nothing to make them feel that way.Suddenly, every little disagreement becomes, “It’s because you have money more than me.”And that’s the real issue.Sometimes the disrespect isn’t coming from the woman. It’s coming from the man’s own insecurity about what her success means about him.So yes, I think this point is valid. A woman’s success should not make a man feel smaller. And a man who truly loves his woman should be able to celebrate her success without turning it into a competition.
But their Ego no go gree.”
The way she sees it, the problem may not always be the woman’s attitude or the money itself. Sometimes, it is simply the difficulty some men have with seeing their partner succeed beyond them financially.
And when ego gets involved, even ordinary disagreements can suddenly turn into arguments about who earns more.
