Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has recalled how he made a living from selling Akara and bread before going into politics and becoming a governor.
Speaking during the state’s monthly covenant prayer service on September 2, Eno said he started the business years ago and later turned it into what he described as an Akara Burger and coffee shop. He explained that people heading to ExxonMobil would stop by in the mornings to buy the food and have coffee.
He said:
“We still have that shop there. I started selling Akara and bread. Back then, I was doing Akara Burger, we open the bread and put it inside for you. People going to Exxon Mobil will buy it in the morning, take coffee..we started coffee shop.
“Every month, that akara business used to give me nothing less than N10 million in a month.”
He used the experience to encourage young people not to look down on small businesses, saying they can start with what they have and gradually build something meaningful from it.
His advice comes months after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also encouraged Nigerians to consider small businesses such as Akara and KuliKuli making as a way of earning a living.
