Akpabio asks Tinubu to reconsider Police withdrawal for lawmakers

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his order to withdraw police officers assigned to federal lawmakers, citing concerns over the safety of legislators

President Tinubu had on November 23 directed the immediate removal of police protection for very important personalities (VIPs) nationwide. By November 26, some federal lawmakers had raised alarms, saying the directive left them exposed to potential security risks.

Speaking at the joint sitting of the National Assembly during the 2026 appropriation bill presentation on Friday, Akpabio conveyed lawmakers’ apprehensions.

“As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some members have asked me to inform you that they may not be able to go home today because of this change,” he said. “We plead with you, Mr President, for a review of the decision.”

Earlier, Akpabio welcomed President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, and members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to the session, describing the National Assembly as the cradle of the president’s public service journey.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the executive and legislature, rejecting claims that such cooperation undermines legislative independence. Akpabio noted that budgeting gains meaning when guided by constitutional partnership rather than institutional rivalry.

Describing the 2026 appropriation bill as a roadmap for national renewal, he said, “Over the past year, our country has navigated a period of significant transition in the midst of challenges… Insecurity has tested our collective resolve and reminded us that peace is not a gift we inherit but a responsibility we must constantly defend.”
