Argentina marked their 2026 World Cup qualification in style with a dominant 4-1 victory over fierce rivals Brazil in Buenos Aires on Tuesday

Goals from Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Giuliano Simeone sealed an emphatic win for the reigning world champions, who had already secured their World Cup spot earlier in the day following Bolivia’s 0-0 draw with Uruguay.
The Estadio Monumental was in a celebratory mood even before kickoff, and Argentina extended the party with a blistering performance.
Alvarez opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing from close range after latching onto Thiago Almada’s through ball. Six minutes later, Fernandez doubled the lead, capitalizing on Brazil’s defensive lapse to slot home Chelsea teammate Mac Allister’s low cross.
Brazil briefly found a lifeline in the 26th minute when a Cristian Romero mistake allowed Mattheus Cunha to pull one back. The Tottenham defender was caught in possession 25 yards from goal, giving Cunha the chance to drill a low shot past Emiliano Martinez.
However, Argentina quickly restored their dominance. In the 37th minute, Almada lofted a pass into the box, and Mac Allister met it with a first-time volley to make it 3-1.
Simeone, son of Argentine football legend Diego Simeone, then put the icing on the cake with a 71st-minute strike—his first international goal—blasting into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
The victory ensures Argentina’s place in next year’s World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with four games to spare. They lead the 10-team South American qualifying group with 31 points from 14 matches. Brazil, meanwhile, sit in fourth place.
South American Qualifying Update
Ecuador remain on track for qualification after a 0-0 draw with Chile in Santiago. They are second in the standings with 23 points, eight behind Argentina.
Uruguay’s draw with Bolivia, coupled with Brazil’s defeat, saw them move up to third on goal difference.
Colombia missed an opportunity to close the gap on the leaders after a 2-2 draw with Paraguay in Barranquilla. Early goals from Luis Diaz and Jhon Duran put Colombia ahead, but Paraguay hit back through Junior Alonso and Julio Enciso.
Venezuela boosted their hopes of a first-ever World Cup appearance with a 1-0 win over Peru in Maturin. Salomon Rondon’s 41st-minute penalty secured three crucial points, lifting Venezuela to seventh place and into contention for an inter-confederation playoff spot.
