INEC fixes date for Edo, Ondo Gov polls

No existing federal road can last seven years – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has declared that no existing federal road can last up to seven years.

He said the verdict was based on findings gathered during his recent road inspection tour crisscrossing the entire nation, noting that some roads are riddled with potholes and have deteriorated into “boreholes”.

The minister expressed his dissatisfaction over the poor jobs done by the contractors over the years while addressing contractors from the six geo-political zones at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Expressing his dismay at how contractors cheat Nigerians with the materials they use to construct roads in the country, the minister said the contractors have been in the habit of increasing the cost of their projects to swindle the country through contract variation and the use of asphalt materials, which are subject to the international price of crude oil.

The former Ebonyi governor also questioned the unauthorised additional work undertaken by contractors and urged them to obtain proper authorisation. He emphasised the importance of thorough documentation and clearance procedures, making it clear that contracts would not be signed without the necessary design plans and original road blueprints.

While criticising workers in the ministry for not supervising road projects, the minister also castigated the entire construction industry in Nigeria, stating that the poor condition of the roads is partly due to a lack of professionalism and outdated construction methods and further directed all contractors to redesign their projects to concrete technology rather than asphalt and vowed not to pay any contractor who does not adhere to the directive.

According to the minister, claims that the cement price would go to N9,000 if the government starts doing concrete roads is false, as it is part of a big campaign of blackmail against him by the cabals in the construction industry.

“This is my line of instructions and I will do whatever the president instructs me to do he is the only one and God that can cancel my instructions so don’t waste your time reporting me to anyone apart from these two. No matter the amount of blackmail and lies, it will not prevail, the minister reassured.

France BAN their athletes from wearing hijabs at the 2024 Paris Olympics

France has banned its athletes from wearing hijabs at next year’s Olympic Games, with the nation sticking to a ‘a regime of strict secularism’ in Paris.

The country’s sports minister announced the news during an interview with French political programme Dimanche en Politique, as per Inside the Games.

Explaining the decision of the French government, Amelie Oudea-Castera said that – having deliberated with prime minister Elisabeth Borne – officials were seeking ‘absolute neutrality’ at the Games in the country’s capital.

‘We have, thanks to a recent decision of the Council of State, expressed very clearly with the Prime Minister our attachment to a regime of strict secularism,’ Oudéa-Castéra said.

‘This means the prohibition of any form of proselytism, the absolute neutrality of public service.

‘The representatives of our delegations in our French teams will not wear the veil.

‘The International Olympic Committee, which governs these rules of participation, is following a logic which consists of understanding the wearing of the veil not as a religious factor but as a cultural factor,’ Oudéa-Castéra added.

Landlord bathes 11-year-old girl with hot water

A landlord identified simply as Michael has allegedly poured hot water on an 11-year-old girl identified only as Princess.

Punch Metro gathered that the incident happened on Saturday in Mowe, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Following the incident, the sister of a tenant in the house, who gave her name as Ejiro, said her sister had planned to leave the apartment which she rented.

She noted that this was due to the fear of being beaten by the landlord who had allegedly made it a habit to beat the girl and her mother when she (mother) was still with the man.

“I am here to see my sister at Baba Ticket area, Oniru Phase 3, Mowe. My sister told me her landlord beats the daughter of his estranged wife. I thought it was a normal beating, but last Thursday, I heard the sound of someone throwing punches at somebody.

“I asked who was being punched. A neighbour told me it was the landlord punching his daughter. When we rushed there, we saw that he held a whip and was beating her. When I asked him why he was beating her, he said the girl refused to go to school.

“We begged him to stop and he did. On Friday morning, he still beat the girl. My sister has said she is planning to pack out of the apartment because the landlord may descend on his tenants too one day and she may be a victim.

“This (Monday) morning, I saw injuries on the girl’s body. I was so scared. He had poured hot water on the girl’s body on Saturday. The girl’s brother told us that when they were hungry, they told the man, and he in turn asked the girl to put water on the stove.

“Then he began beating her and when the water was hot, he poured it on her body. We heard her screams that night,” Ejiro told Punch correspondent.

She added that there was also a day the man beat the girl for three hours because she ate bread.

When contacted, Princess’ mother, Grace Ojile, said the man had always been beating the little girl.

“(He poured) hot water on her body. If you see the back, it’s all burnt. He inflicted injury on her head last week, I just heard that. I’m with her at the hospital,” a worried Ojile said.

In pictures obtained by Punch correspondent, scars suspected to be from the hot water injury were seen on parts of Princess’ arm.

Princess, who spoke from the hospital bed on Monday night, said, “He poured hot water on me on Saturday; boiled water.”

Details of why the landlord had been allegedly abusing the girl is still sketchy as of press time, but a source in the Ogun State Police Command said the man claimed Princess was beaten because she refused to go school.

“He said the girl was seen roaming about when she was supposed to be in school and that the girl had said she was not interested in going to school again. But if she had said that, it shows that something is wrong somewhere and treating her like that was not the way forward.”

Punch Metro gathered that the matter was reported by a concerned resident at the Mowe Police Station.

The Mowe Divisional Police Officer of the station, Afeniforo Folake, said the suspect had been detained, adding that the matter would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, for further investigation.

More than 100 dead, 150 injured in Iraq wedding fire

More than 100 people were killed and 150 injured in a fire at a wedding party in Hamdaniya district in Iraq’s Nineveh province that left civil defence searching the charred skeleton of a building for survivors into the early hours of Wednesday.

Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq told Reuters that 113 people had been confirmed dead, with state media putting the death toll at at least 100, with 150 people injured.

The fire ripped through a large events hall in the north-eastern region after fireworks were lit during the celebration, local civil defence said, according to state media.

“We saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. Those who managed got out and those who didn’t got stuck. Even those who made their way out were broken,” said Imad Yohana, a 34-year-old who escaped the inferno.

Preliminary information indicated that the building was made of highly flammable construction materials, contributing to its rapid collapse, state media said.

Ambulances and medical crews were dispatched to the site by federal Iraqi authorities and Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, according to official statements.

Blind bride gives eye masks to guests so they can experience wedding like her

A bride who lost her sight at 17 has shared how she asked her groom and wedding guests to wear blindfolds so they could experience what it was like for her to walk down the aisle.

The emotional video, shared on TikTok, captures the moment Lucy Edwards, from Birmingham, greets her husband Ollie at the altar – with everyone else in the room wearing black blindfolds in order to ‘live a moment in her shoes’.

Lucy lost her eyesight as a teenager due to a rare genetic condition called incontinentia pigmenti and married beau Ollie in an intimate wedding ceremony in Kew Gardens, London last month.

The 27-year-old took a unique approach to her big day though, requesting that her husband-to-be and their family and friends experienced those steps down the aisle in darkness.

The emotional video shows Lucy, from Birmingham, clad in a beautiful white wedding gown and veil, carrying a bridal bouquet.

Miss Molly can be seen being walked down the aisle as Lucy follows closely behind with her dad escorting her down slowly.

Lucy beams with happiness as she walks towards Ollie, revealing rows of standing guests who have each been given black blindfolds to wear.

The guests can then be spotted taking off their own masks, with many smiling in admiration as the groom keeps his on.

Ollie can be seen crying as the on-screen text reads: ‘Before Ollie took off his blindfold, we had a moment for him to feel my dress and understand why I chose it.’

Lucy took to social media this week to share the footage, writing: ‘So, this is the moment that I blindfolded all my guests, and I walked down the aisle on my wedding day.

‘It was such an emotional moment and one that I will remember for the rest of my life.

‘I am so lucky that I have a husband who accepts me for exactly who I am, my disability and everything.

‘I really believe in the philosophy that we are all just small beings and atoms in this massive planet and Stephen [Hawking] taught me that you can love and hate your disability equally and that’s a truly beautiful thing.’

The tear-jerking clip has received over 300,000 likes and thousands of comments. One person wrote: ‘We’ve just been told my three-year-old is going to lose his sight and I hope he finds someone who loves him like this. You’re beautiful, by the way.’

Another said: ‘The groom falling to his knees while seeing you as a bride – the way you see – is a fairytale moment.’

A third commented: ‘Gosh, who’s cutting onions?’ A fourth added: ‘This actually took my breath away. Thank you for sharing something so heartwarming.’

The Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area of the state, Wale Adedayo, before an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court, following a petition by the state government.

It will be recalled that Adedayo was arrested by Police operatives at his residence in Ijebu-Ife, Ijebu East and immediately transferred to the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, where he spent the night.

Adedayo is appearing before a magistrate’s court at Isabo, Abeokuta, on a petition by the state government over an allegation of diversion of funds meant for councils in the state. He was arraigned on a two-count charge.

The petition, which accused Adedayo of deliberately circulating falsehood, false report to government, threat to life and interference with the exercise of executive function,” was signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi.

Defendant counsel, Kayode Akinsola, applied for bail for the accused person, saying the offences allegedly committed are bailable.

The prosecutor, Inspector Olaide Rawlings did not object to the bail application.

In his ruling, Magistrate A. Araba admitted him to bail with the sum of N2 million and two ‘responsible and reliable sureties’ in like sum.

The Magistrate, however, ordered his remand at Ibara prison, Abeokuta, pending perfection of the bail conditions.

Araba adjourned the matter till October 20, 2023, for trial.

A bride-to-be has passed away after getting a b**b job because she wanted to show off her cleavage in a low-cut wedding dress.

Beautician Alessia Neboso, 21, from Italy, was planning to wed her longtime boyfriend Mario Lucchesi.

But just days after the breast implant surgery, Alessia started to feel unwell. The 21-year-old developed a high fever, fatigue, a cough, weakness, and gastrointestinal issues.

After her condition worsened, her family took her to the emergency room of the Villa dei Fiori Clinic in Acerra near Naples, Italy.

By the time she was admitted on 20 September, her condition was critical.

Dr Feliciano Ciccarelli told local media: ‘The colleagues on duty immediately understood that the situation was very serious.

‘Her functional indicators were all altered; the kidneys were already failing, her white blood cell count was at 17,000, and she was starting to have difficulty breathing.’

Despite medics’ attempts to keep her alive, she died from a cardiac arrest a few hours later.

NLC, TUC declare indefinite strike from October 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, of Nigeria have declared an indefinite strike starting from October 3

The two labour centres have told Nigerians to stockpile foodstuffs because the strike would shut down economic activities in the country.

The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero and the TUC, Festus Osifo disclosed this after their separate Emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the communique read by the two Presidents, the indefinite strike was as a result of the alleged insensitivity of government to the plights of Nigerians as a result of the removal of petrol subsidy and continuous demonstration of unwillingness and complete lack of initiative.

S3xual assault: Court frees Rivers varsity professor

A Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt, on Monday, discharged and acquitted a lecturer at the Rivers State University, Prof David Ogbonna, who was standing trial for alleged s3xual assault of a 21-year-old female student, Grace Ndamatin.

Ogbonna, a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology, was arraigned by the police on June 28, 2022, after being accused by Miss Ndamatin of sexually assaulting her in his office.

But the presiding Magistrate, Chief Magistrate Poromon Menenen, in his judgement said the prosecution team failed to prove that their client was s3xually assaulted.

Menenen noted that the evidence claimed by the defendant was never presented in court and subsequently discharged and acquitted Prof Ogbonna.

Speaking to newsmen after the court judgement, Dr Emma Okah, one of the lead lawyers to Prof Ogbonna, said the ruling did not come to him as a surprise.

Dr Okah stated, “I will tell you that I’m not surprised at all that the judgement of this court came the way and the manner and the direction it did.

“Because to some extent, the law is a bit logical and we knew from day one that in the absence of any evidence, you know upon which the ingredients of indecent sexual assault would be based.

“There was no way the prosecution was going to succeed. The end result would always be the discharge and acquittal of the accused persons. And that is exactly what the court did.”

Okah further said that the court judgement would be sent to the university management to effect the reinstatement of Prof Ogbonna who had been on suspension.

“Initially we would have preferred that this case be heard in public so that Nigerians would be part of the proceedings, hear and see what evidence the prosecution would be going to tender. Not one, and you heard the court discharge the Professor and acquit him.

“So what wrong did the Professor commit? He was suspended, of course, we are going to take the necessary steps to return him to the status quo. It is obvious that nothing was found against him.

“He is innocent, has been innocent and will remain innocent as far as this case is concerned, based on the facts that we have today,” Okah added.

Mohbad: Man promises late singer’s wife N10m for DNA test

A Nigerian man, Larry Omodia, has urged the late singer Mohbad’s wife to conduct a DNA test on her son to confirm his paternity.

Omodia, the CEO of African Television, pledged to provide an amount of N10 million to support Mohbad’s widow for an ‘all-expense paid’ DNA test if she agreed.

He expressed the view that a DNA test was necessary considering the numerous controversies surrounding Mohbad’s passing.

He asserted that a leaked conversation between Mohbad and Omowunmi during a heated argument made her a prime suspect.

He said: “N10 million to Mohbad’s wife if DNA proves that that child belongs to Mohbad. African television will pay for the DNA test, raise N10 million for Mohbad’s wife to raise that child if the DNA proves that that child is actually Mohbad’s child.

“This is to counter those people who say, ‘If you talk about DNA, they will sue you for N3 million. Let them come after me. My name is Larry Omodia. I’m the CEO of African Television.

“I’m going to sponsor the DNA test and make sure that the baby gets N10 million if he’s proven to be Mohbad’s child. Why? Because accusation is traumatic. But what is more traumatic than accusation? A life of lies.

“So we would compensate Mohbad’s wife if the baby actually belongs to Mohbad. But if that baby isn’t for Mohbad, men will learn a lot of lessons from that.

“So, this message is to Mohbad’s family, get me that woman, get the baby; we’ll do a DNA test. If the woman has nothing to hide, she walks away with N10 million; that is a promise. And if you want to sue people for what is right, come after me.

“We are tired of women sending our boys to jail, killing our boys, lying against our men. Do you know how many men are in their graves because of a woman? Kings have been buried by women. Future presidents have been put in jail by women.

“It is time that we said, ‘No to slutty women’. And I’m not saying Mohbad’s wife or girlfriend is bad but we want to clear her name. We want to clear her name if she’s innocent.

“Listen to the audio conversation between her and Mohbad, that audio conversation makes her the first suspect. You guys are going after Naira Marley, Sam Larry, all kinds of people but listen to that audio conversation.

“Yes, what happened between Naira Marley, Sam Larry, they’re all criminals; those actions were wrong. But in the case of murder, the primary suspect in my opinion is the wife because the audio conversation, from Mohbad’s conversation with her makes her a prime suspect. And the only way we can clear her name is by proper investigation. So, we’re offering N10 million for her to clear her name in this case.”

This comes in the wake of a stern warning issued by Mohbad’s sister-in-law to social media sensation, VeryDarkBalckMan after he requested DNA be done for the 27-year-old rapper’s son, Liam.

She threatened the Instagram activist with an N300 million lawsuit for defamation of character if he persisted with his DNA request.

A newborn has been nicknamed ‘baby hulk‘ after a rare condition caused her arms and chest to become ultra swole.

Armani Milby, from Campbellsville, Kentucky, has a severe form of lymphangioma, a condition that causes benign tumors to grow in the lymphatic vessels, tube-like structures that carry fluid around the body.

The swelling has caused her upper torso and arms to become disproportionately bulky compared to the rest of her body.

Armani’s mother Chelsey, 33, gave her daughter the affectionate nickname ‘mini Hulk’ when she was born because she looked ‘like a mini bodybuilder’.

Armani spent the first three months of her life in the hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she received specialist treatment to drain excess fluid from her arms.

She is now scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the excess lymph vessels to help reduce her arms and chest to a normal size.

She will also need further surgery to remove any excess skin left on her body.

Her daughter’s condition, which can be caused by genetics or hormone problems, was diagnosed at week 17 of pregnancy.

Armani weighed 12lbs when she was born and made her mother look so large when she was pregnant that strangers would ask if she was having triplets.

Ms Milby, who has two other children, said she was left in tears after the news— saying she didn’t understand why her baby had the condition.

Lymphangioma is when fluid-filled bumps, or cysts, form under the skin because the lymph vessels overgrow and stop draining fluid from the body.

The condition is rare, affecting about one in 4,000 children, and is normally diagnosed at birth or within the first few years of childhood.

Armani is scheduled for surgery later this year where doctors will remove extra lymphatic vessels and over the coming years, she will need to undergo surgery to remove the extra skin.

“There was somebody that gave me N1m from nowhere. I had never seen N10,000 before.

“The money I used to have then was always N1,300, N800, N1,200, and N520. And somebody gave me N1m cash. He came to the hotel and gave me N1m. He said he doesn’t watch TV but he saw me on TV and he felt he should give me N1m.

“I saw N1m, I could not sleep. I was looking at the money. I said, ‘This money will change.’ I was speaking English that day. Me that used to disturb the whole place, I was quiet [sic]. I caught myself speaking good English.”

Mum hospitalised after two children electrocuted

A yet-to-be-identified mother in the Mushin area of Lagos State is currently battling for her life after losing two of her children to electrocution on Thursday.

According to sources in the area, the children, a girl aged 10 and a boy aged seven, were electrocuted when they attempted to turn on the television after returning from school.

Punch Metro gathered from the sources in the area that the parents, who were speculated to have been away or inside the room when the incident occurred, on learning the fate of their children, were thrown into despair with the mother fainting and currently battling for her life at the hospital.

Speaking with Punch Metro, a resident of the area named Toyosi described the incident as a work of the devil.

She added, “I heard that it was after school on Thursday, the girl was trying to turn on the TV from the socket when she got electrocuted. Without even knowing what had happened to his older sister, the younger boy went to touch her, he too got electrocuted.

“They stayed at that spot until the light was taken and then they fell. I heard the woman is still at the hospital. She has yet to recover from the shock. We heard that when people went to visit her, she couldn’t talk, she couldn’t cry, she just sat at a spot, looking.”

Another resident of the area, who didn’t give her name, disclosed that the mother of the children had a third child she was breastfeeding when the two older ones passed on.
