Cable theft throws parts of Abuja and Presidential Villa into darkness

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that parts of the Presidential Villa and 60% of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are experiencing power outages due to the theft of a 132-kilovolt underground cable

In a statement released on Friday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah disclosed that the cable, which transports bulk electricity to the 132kV Central Area Transmission Substation, was vandalized near the Millennium Park axis in Abuja.

The vandals reportedly made away with 40 meters of 1×500 mm² XLPE conductors from two 132kV transmission lines, severely affecting power supply. The Central Area Transmission Substation supplies electricity to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which distributes power to several areas in the FCT, including Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Life Camp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.

TCN stated that engineers have been mobilized to the site to repair the vandalized cables and restore power.

This incident follows a previous report by AEDC attributing recent power outages in Abuja to faulty 132-kilovolt lines between Katampe and the AT5 Central Area Transmission Station.
