The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Augustine Eguavoen as the head coach for the Super Eagles’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda

This decision follows the unexpected withdrawal of German coach Bruno LabBadia, who was previously named as the successor to Finidi George.
LabBadia’s withdrawal was due to unresolved issues with German tax laws, which prevented the finalization of his agreement with the NFF.
According to NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, the federation was unable to agree to pay the additional tax percentage on LabBadia’s salary demanded by German tax authorities, ranging from 32% to 40%.
Eguavoen, a former player and Technical Director of the Super Eagles, takes over as head coach, with a 23-player squad named for the upcoming qualifiers.
The squad includes Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi, and stand-in captain William Troost-Ekong, who return after extended injury absences.
The NFF’s decision to appoint Eguavoen ensures continuity and stability for the team ahead of the crucial AFCON qualifiers.
