El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele unveiled a new initiative offering 5,000 “free passports” to highly skilled workers from other countries. The aim is to attract professionals like scientists, engineers, doctors, artists, and philosophers to boost the country’s economy through foreign investment.
Under this program, selected individuals will receive full citizenship rights, including the right to vote. Additionally, El Salvador plans to assist their relocation by waiving taxes and tariffs on moving expenses, such as equipment, software, and intellectual property.
President Bukele emphasized the significant impact these skilled workers could have on shaping the future of El Salvador. However, detailed information about the program’s implementation is yet to be provided by the government.
This initiative follows other bold reforms implemented by Bukele’s administration, including adopting Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar in 2021. Despite criticism from the International Monetary Fund regarding the risks associated with cryptocurrency, El Salvador has continued to embrace its use.
Moreover, El Salvador’s legislative assembly passed a migration law last year, aiming to streamline citizenship for foreigners supporting social and economic development programs by donating Bitcoin.
Bukele’s leadership has also been marked by a tough stance on crime, which he claims has improved security. However, his approach has faced criticism for alleged human rights abuses, including mass detentions and reported torture in prisons.
