The Federal Government has strongly condemned a recent ruling by a Canadian Federal Court that labeled certain Nigerian political parties as “terrorist organizations,” describing the decision as reckless, baseless, and an unacceptable intrusion into Nigeria’s internal affairs
In a statement issued Friday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said the ruling stemmed from an immigration case involving Douglas Egharevba, a Nigerian who sought refugee status in Canada in 2017. The judgment alleged that some political groups in Nigeria had terrorist affiliations.

The government denounced the classification, warning that it unfairly stigmatizes entire political parties rather than targeting individuals who may have committed crimes.
“The Court made a sweeping accusation against the entire membership of a political party that has produced three democratically elected presidents, instead of focusing on individuals found wanting. The larger ramification of the decision is that every member of the mentioned political parties is a potential terrorist, and that is completely false and unacceptable,” the statement read.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, the government stressed that all recognized political parties operate under a robust legal and constitutional framework. It also cautioned that such rulings could spread misinformation and incite unnecessary tension.
The Federal Government called on Canada to immediately retract the decision, urging engagement with Nigerian authorities to correct what it termed a grave misrepresentation.
“Nigeria is a sovereign nation with a vibrant democratic system. To associate legitimate political entities with terrorism without credible evidence is a serious distortion that undermines our democratic institutions,” the statement said.
The government also reaffirmed its efforts to combat terrorism and its dedication to global security cooperation, while urging the international community to disregard the ruling.
Additionally, officials warned Nigerian citizens against misrepresenting the country to foreign governments in pursuit of asylum or other benefits, emphasizing that unfounded allegations only harm the nation’s image.
“Nigeria remains committed to the global fight against terrorism and has made significant strides in countering extremist groups. We urge the international community to disregard this misguided ruling and reaffirm confidence in Nigeria’s democratic governance and rule of law,” the statement concluded.
