In a newly revised visa reciprocity schedule, the U.S. government has reduced the validity period of key non-immigrant visa categories — including B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) — to just three months with single entry for Nigerian applicants.

Reacting to the development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “disappointment” in a statement issued Wednesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

“The attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria has been drawn to the recent decision by the United States Government to revise its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigerian citizens,” the statement said.
“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries.”

The government argued that the new visa restriction undermines the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect expected between friendly nations. It also warned that the move could have serious implications for Nigerian students, professionals, and families with legitimate ties to the U.S.

“While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities,” Ebienfa added.

The ministry stressed that the decision risks harming academic, professional, and cultural exchanges that have long served as a bridge between the two nations.

Diplomatic talks are reportedly ongoing as Nigeria seeks a reversal of the policy.

“Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to pursuing a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest,” the statement concluded.

The call comes amid growing frustration among Nigerians affected by the tightened visa rules, particularly those hoping to study, work, or visit family in the United States.
