Abubakar Abdullahi, the Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State who became widely known for protecting hundreds of Christians during violent attacks, has died
His son, Salah Abubakar, confirmed the death on Friday, saying the cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, according to Daily Trust. He explained that his father had been battling health issues linked to a heart condition.

“He died ten days after he was admitted. He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem. He’d go for check-ups and return. His health hadn’t been stable since the heart disease diagnosis.”
The respected religious leader reportedly died at the age of 90 and is survived by 19 children — 12 boys and seven girls.
Imam Abdullahi earned national and international admiration in June 2018 after sheltering 262 Christians during deadly religious clashes that swept through 10 villages in Barkin Ladi. At the height of the violence, he hid the victims inside a mosque and his personal residence until calm was restored, saving them from being killed.
His courageous act drew widespread praise and led to several honours, including the International Religious Freedom Award presented to him by the United States Department of State in 2019.
