Actor Kunle Remi has appealed to Nigerians most especially Lagos residents to take greater responsibility for how they dispose of waste, warning that poor sanitation habits are making flooding worse across the country.
The actor expressed frustration over the way people casually dump rubbish into drainage channels and on the streets, saying such actions have serious consequences whenever heavy rains arrive.
He urged residents to stop treating drains like refuse bins and encouraged people to speak up when they see others throwing trash into gutters. According to him, discarded plastic bottles, cans, food packs and other waste eventually block waterways, leaving floodwater with nowhere to flow.
Kunle Remi stressed that tackling flooding is not only the government’s responsibility but also depends on the daily choices of ordinary citizens. He also appealed to motorists to stop tossing litter out of car windows, noting that keeping the environment clean starts with individual discipline.
The actor called on everyone to do their part, saying cleaner surroundings and freer drainage channels would go a long way in reducing the impact of flooding in many communities.
He said:
“We Are a Dirty People, and That’s Why Flooding Keeps Getting Worse.
Let us stop dumping refuse in drainage channels. We are not animals. Call out or confront anyone you see throwing waste into the drains. People throw cans, plastic bottles, and all kinds of rubbish everywhere. Why then won’t there be flooding? It’s getting worse. Let us all try to do the right thing. Stop throwing trash out of your car windows.”
