Lindsey Vonn opened up after a frightening Olympic crash left her with a tibia fracture that will require multiple surgeries.
Looking back on the moment, she shared the heartbreak of the outcome, saying;
“my Olympic dream did not finish the way I dreamt it would.”
She explained just how small the margin for error is in downhill skiing, writing,
“I dared to dream and had worked so hard to achieve it. Because in Downhill ski racing the difference between a strategic line and a catastrophic injury can be as small as 5 inches.” Vonn added that she was “5 inches too tight on my line”
when her arm clipped the inside gate, triggering the crash, while making it clear no previous injuries contributed.
Even with the pain and surgeries ahead, Vonn stood by her decision to race.
“Standing in the starting gate yesterday was an incredible feeling that I will never forget. Knowing I stood there having a chance to win was a victory in and of itself. I also knew that racing was a risk. It always was and always will be an incredibly dangerous sport.”
Vonn’s message made it clear that while the injury is devastating, her pride in competing remains stronger than the setback, and her fight is far from over.
