The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a warning to bakeries across the country, advising against the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production
The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, shared the caution during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). She emphasized that bakeries found violating the directive would face strict penalties.
She explained that NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance plays a key role in monitoring compliance. “We routinely conduct inspections to check for certain products, sometimes triggered by complaints through our reform office,” Adeyeye stated. “We have already shut down several bakeries for using bromate in their bread production. If we find or receive complaints about bromate in bread, we will close the bakery.”
Adeyeye further highlighted that the agency had also closed multiple water production facilities for substandard products or poor hygiene. She stressed the importance of the Regulatory Inspection Directorate, which ensures that products meet the standards at both registration and market stages.
“During the initial inspection, we take samples and test the products. However, some producers may alter their methods after registration,” she noted. “This is why post-marketing surveillance is crucial—it ensures that what was registered is what is being sold to consumers, maintaining product standards and market control.”
