Senator Ned Nwoko has reacted after a man apologized for false accusation that he was sent by the lawmaker to assassinate Nollywood actress and his wife, Regina Daniels

The accusation, which went viral on TikTok a few days ago, sparked widespread outrage after the man claimed that he was offered N5 million to carry out the act.

The claim drew heavy backlash on social media, with many Nigerians demanding clarification from the senator.

In a fresh video shared on his official social media page, Ned Nwoko posted a clip showing the same man publicly begging for forgiveness and admitting that he lied for online attention. In the video, the man could be heard pleading with the senator, confessing that he makes false claims on TikTok to attract views.

Alongside the video, the senator issued a lengthy statement condemning what he described as the unchecked spread of dangerous falsehoods on Nigerian social media.

“The accompanying video trended a couple of days ago. It is testament to the fact that Nigerian social media space has become one of the most unregulated in the world. Laying very serious allegations have become a common trait to attract millions of views without recourse to the damaging effects on the people involved. Knowing that there could be evasion of consequences because they can easily prey on the emotions of Nigerians encourages this deviant behavior.”

He warned that such reckless accusations could destroy reputations and incite public anger without any consequences for the perpetrators.

“This case and many others has now clearly justified the urgent need for the social media bill in the National Assembly. You can’t lie to make money and turn around to apologize after criminally defaming and hurting people.”

Nwoko further argued that social media companies should be made to open offices in Nigeria and be held legally responsible for the content shared on their platforms.

“It is time for social media companies to be mandated to open offices in Nigeria and to take responsibility for what they allow on their platforms. If landlords are being threatened with punishments for actions of their tenants who are yahoo boys, what stops social media companies from being held responsible for allowing defamatory contents in their platforms.”

He added that local media outlets already operate under strict defamation laws, questioning why foreign tech companies should be exempt.

“All our local media houses comply with laws concerning defamation. Why make an exception for foreign companies who don’t pay taxes and ultimately avoid all manner of liabilities because of the absence of regulations.”

The senator concluded by urging Nigerians to support his proposed social media regulation bill, stressing that it would create jobs, ensure tax payments, make legal action easier, aid in tracking criminals, and ensure that Nigeria’s data is not controlled by foreign interests.

“It’s Senator Ned today, who knows who is next?”
