Rungo, a Mozambican national, was arrested two weeks ago on charges of identity fraud and violating South Africa’s immigration laws. She was granted bail yesterday at R10,000 but was placed under house arrest.

Authorities alleged that Rungo continued residing in South Africa despite her documentation being revoked in September 2024 due to fraudulent acquisition. Siya Qoza, a spokesperson for Home Affairs, stated, “The department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.”

Initially, the court denied her bail last week, citing concerns that her release could disrupt public peace. However, during a resumed hearing, Magistrate Sadiqah Guendouz approved her bail, ruling that her immigration status would remain unchanged whether she was detained or not.

As part of her bail conditions, Rungo is barred from leaving her residence except for legal consultations. The magistrate declared, “Rungo will be under house arrest and may only leave her home to consult with her lawyers. She is forbidden from applying for residency permits or having anyone do so on her behalf, and immigration officers may conduct unannounced visits to verify compliance.”

Rungo insists she is innocent and has accused authorities of violating her right to a fair hearing.

Her legal troubles follow last year’s controversy over her daughter’s eligibility to compete in Miss South Africa. Adetshina, who was deemed ineligible due to her citizenship status, later withdrew from the competition amid online backlash. She went on to win Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 before securing the Miss Universe 2024 first runner-up title and the Miss Universe Africa and Oceania crown.

Rungo is scheduled to appear in court again on May 8.
