Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has called on African governments to prohibit Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, from visiting the continent due to her recent remarks about Nigeria

Kemi Badenoch, who spent much of her childhood in Nigeria, has described her upbringing there as marked by fear and insecurity in a nation afflicted by corruption.
These comments have drawn criticism from Nigerian officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who accused her of denigrating her country of origin.
In response, Kuti expressed his disapproval during a recent Instagram Live session, stating, “Many have been praising this woman [Kemi Badenoch]; someone who has been insulting us, not only us but our ancestors. She said we should pay Europeans for colonialism.” He further asserted that Badenoch’s remarks suggest Africans should compensate Europeans for the atrocities committed during the colonial era, including the killing of millions of ancestors. Kuti concluded that African governments should ban Badenoch from entering the continent and that she should face legal consequences if she does.
Badenoch has stood by her statements, with a spokesperson noting that she “is not interested in doing Nigeria’s PR” and “tells the truth… she stands by what she says.” This stance has intensified debates about the portrayal of Nigeria by individuals of Nigerian descent in prominent international positions.
