Going forward, most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians will now be valid for only three months and will allow a single entry.

This update was shared in a statement by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and takes immediate effect.

“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the Embassy said.

However, the U.S. clarified that this new rule will not affect visas issued before July 8, 2025. Those visas will still be valid based on their original terms.

According to the U.S. government, visa reciprocity is a standard practice around the world and is reviewed regularly. The terms can be changed at any time, including the number of entries allowed and how long the visa is valid for.

The Embassy explained that U.S. visa policies are based on global security and technical standards meant to protect the immigration system. It also said it is working with the Nigerian government to help the country meet the required benchmarks.

These benchmarks include:

  • Making sure travel documents are secure and identities are verified
  • Managing visa overstays effectively
  • Sharing security and criminal record information to improve safety

The U.S. also acknowledged the efforts Nigeria has made so far and said it is in ongoing discussions with Nigerian officials to resolve any remaining issues.

“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices,” the Embassy said.

Nigerian travelers were advised to respect the conditions of their visas and ensure their travel documents are genuine and up to date.

The Embassy also reaffirmed America’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with Nigeria, especially in education, business, and cultural exchange.

“The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria. We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels,” the statement added.
