The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has stated that it will not prevent sprinter Favour Ofili from switching her sporting nationality if she chooses to represent another country

Speaking to The Guardian, an AFN official confirmed the athlete’s right to make such a decision, noting that under World Athletics regulations, she would have to observe a mandatory three-year waiting period before competing for a new nation.
“If she wants to switch nationality, we won’t stop her,” the official said. “But according to World Athletics rules, she’ll have to wait three years before she can represent another country in competitions.”
This comes amid growing speculation that Ofili may be considering a nationality switch due to frustration with repeated administrative lapses, including her controversial omission from the 100m event at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
While expressing regret over her dissatisfaction, the AFN maintained that discipline and structure remain key to the federation’s progress. The body also emphasized that Nigeria continues to nurture other world-class athletes ready to step up.
“We have other talents coming up. No one is above the system,” the official added.
In summary, the AFN has made it clear that it respects Ofili’s personal decision and will abide by international regulations if she chooses to take her career elsewhere.
