Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has expressed concern over Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign, warning that the team’s weaknesses could cost them a spot at the 2026 tournament.
The Eagles have struggled in their qualifiers, recording draws against Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa. With just two games left, Nigeria sit third in Group C with 11 points, behind South Africa on 17 points and Benin Republic on 14.

Speaking on the Sunday Oliseh podcast, Yakubu pointed out the team’s lack of creativity.
“When we look at the team, we have too many defensive midfielders and not many attacking midfielders,” he said.
Yakubu, who netted 21 goals in 58 games for Nigeria, also noted that Victor Osimhen is finding it difficult to score due to poor service.
“If I play in this team, I will struggle to score goals. When I look at Osimhen when he plays, he is fighting because he knows already when he sees the goals he scores, he has to hustle by himself,” he explained.
He further criticised the team’s playing style, saying it relies too much on individual brilliance.
“We don’t play like a team. It’s individual football we play, and we want the players to make magic,” he added.
