A disturbing video that surfaced on Friday has triggered widespread condemnation after capturing scenes of alleged s3xual assault involving several women during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State
The footage shows groups of young men reportedly targeting women in public, forcefully stripping them and subjecting them to different forms of molestation.
Reports indicate the incident took place on Thursday, March 19, during an annual community festival where women are allegedly expected to stay indoors. It was claimed that any woman seen outside during the celebration becomes vulnerable to harassment by participants.
There are also unverified claims suggesting that some victims may have been raped, though authorities have not officially confirmed these allegations.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, condemned the act, describing it as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.”
He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, had directed a thorough investigation into the incident.
“This is alarming, disgusting and embarrassing. The CP has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The command condemns this in totality, no custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens.
The Commissioner of Police Delta State CP Aina Adesola urges Deltans to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice.
The command also calls for witnesses who can provide with useful information that can aid the ongoing investigation.”
Delta State Governor should cancel this Ozoro festival entirely and save their women from this sort sexual harrasement happening every year.
Any culture where people can't maintain basic decency should never be allowed to continue.
