This action is part of the mass deportation efforts under President Trump’s administration.

Guobadia, a Nigerian-born businessman, first arrived in the United States in 1982 but overstayed his visa and was declared deportable in 1985. He faced multiple arrests for bank and credit card fraud, leading to his deportation in 1992; however, he returned to the U.S. shortly thereafter. In 2016, he applied for citizenship, but his application was denied.

Porsha Williams, known for her role on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” filed for divorce from Guobadia in February 2024 after 15 months of marriage. She expressed sadness over his detention, stating her focus is on moving forward with her family.

This incident occurs amid a broader context of mass deportations in the U.S. Recently, nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants detained at Guantanamo Bay were deported back to Venezuela following high-level discussions between the U.S. and Venezuelan governments.

Despite President Trump’s aggressive deportation policies, initial figures indicate that deportation rates are currently lower than during President Biden’s last year in office. In his first month, President Trump deported 37,660 people, compared to a monthly average of 57,000 during Biden’s final year. Experts anticipate that deportation rates will rise as new methods are introduced to enhance arrests and removals.

The mass deportation policy has faced criticism for its potential social and economic impacts. Reports suggest that such actions could lead to a significant loss in annual U.S. GDP, estimated between 4.2% to 6.8%, equating to $1.1 trillion to $1.7 trillion in 2022 dollars.
